What is Children's Counseling?

Children's counseling is a type of therapy designed specifically for children, teens, and adolescents. Our licensed therapists have specialized training to help young people navigate tough situations and develop healthy coping skills.

Counseling can support children who have experienced trauma or stressful life events. It also equips parents and caregivers with tools and strategies to help their child thrive.

When Should You Consider Counseling for your Child?

Every child faces challenges, but sometimes extra support is needed. Signs your child may benefit from counseling include:

  • Acting out of character or showing rebellious behaviors
  • Withdrawing from family or friends
  • Increased aggression or irritability
  • Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed

Children who have experienced trauma such as abuse, the death of a loved one, moving, divorce, or illness, often benefit from counseling. If you’ve tried helping your child on your own and things aren’t improving, counseling can be a great next step.

What Happens During a Counseling Session?

The first appointment focuses on getting to know your child and setting goals together. Our counselors use age-appropriate approaches, which may include:

  • Play therapy
  • Art activities
  • Confidence-building exercises
  • Problem-solving skills

These methods help children express themselves, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies.

How Long Does Treatment Last?

Every child’s journey is unique. The length of therapy depends on your child’s needs and the goals you set with the counselor. Many children meet with a counselor once a week for several months, but this can vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get my child help as a new patient?

We offer counseling for children at all of our outpatient health center locations.

The first step is to start with an assessment. If you have 60 minutes available now, you can speak with a counselor over video for an assessment (Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm).

To schedule an appointment, call, chat or book your spot online.

Do you offer transportation?

Yes, to qualifying patients. Each of our locations is also located near a main bus route for patient convenience. If you are regularly unable to make it to your appointments because of lack of transportation, please let us know.

How do I pay for care?

Signature Health accepts:

  • Medicaid
  • Traditional Medicare
  • Some Medicare Advantage plans

For patients without insurance, we offer a sliding fee scale program for those who qualify. This means payment is based on your income and household size. We can also help get new patients set up with Medicaid. See a list of accepted insurances.
